The Cesar Chavez Education Institute was established to fulfill the promise of the American dream of an equal education - NFWSC’s first priority for the new millennium.
The available statistics for Latino school children shows distressingly low levels of proficiency in reading and math and no improvement whatsoever in academic performance over the past 25 years – except in the high school drop out rate. Only 2 in 10 Latino students read at grade level. Experts agree children who do not read at grade level by the third grade are likely to fail in the classroom and drop out before graduating high school.
Before CCEI, there have been no existing programs that address the educational needs of these Latino families in a comprehensive, focused, and deliberate manner.
CCEI provides practical educational instruction and products for grades K to 8, coordinated to school efforts and designed to supplement without replicating existing instruction. We focus on teaching children, especially English Language Learners, in three specific areas that, research shows, make a genuine difference:
- Ensuring they read to grade level by the third grade.
- Developing academic English skills to understand textbooks and instruction.
- Assuring their math skills are progressing so they can understand and perform basic algebra by the eighth grade.
CCEI has served more than 3,500 students in 38 school districts with extraordinary results. Students who have completed the 40 hour sequence of instruction have increased their performance on the California Standards Test an average of 10 percentage points. Across the board, students showed growth in reading fluency, vocabulary, multiplication tables, understanding word problems, solving problems with fractions and decimals, and simple equations.
